How the Berliner Festspiele Increased Their Newsletter Sign-Ups by Almost 90%

Four newsletters, two cultural institutions, one smart form: starmate rebuilt the newsletter sign-up for the Berliner Festspiele and the Gropius Bau in a privacy-compliant way. The result is a dynamic double opt-in process that simplifies the user experience and increases conversion.

At a glance

Almost 90% more sign-ups per month and a double opt-in rate of 85%.

  • Monthly new sign-ups: +90%
  • Double opt-in rate: 85% (previously approx. 75%)
  • Multiple sign-ups: over 80%
  • Weekly growth: approx. 450 subscribers

Challenge

Interested people should be able to sign up easily for up to four newsletters at once. Depending on the selection, it had to be documented in a legally compliant way for which channel consent exists. Classic forms often set attributes right before the double opt-in click, which is risky under data protection law.

  • Confusing newsletter offering across several channels and venues
  • Rigid double opt-in campaigns with no connection to the topics chosen
  • High hurdles for GDPR-compliant documentation of individual consents
  • No self-service options for managing interests

Solution

With the E-Marketing Suite, starmate implemented a privacy-compliant solution:

  • Address and profile management: A central form allows free combination of all four newsletter channels.
  • Campaign automation: The form triggers a double opt-in event and passes the selected newsletter attributes in encrypted form to a dynamic placeholder in the confirmation link.
  • Email marketing: Only when the confirmation link is clicked are the attributes set in the profile. This ensures seamless documentation.
  • Preference center: Recipients adjust their interests themselves at any time.

The Result

By removing technical barriers, sign-up numbers rose significantly, while administrative effort fell thanks to automated documentation.

  • Almost 90% more monthly newsletter sign-ups
  • Double opt-in rate of 85% (previously approx. 75%)
  • Over 80% multiple subscriptions

Customer voice

“starmate understood that data protection and usability don't have to be opposites. The new, dynamic sign-up makes it effortless for our guests to subscribe to exactly the cultural news that interests them, and for us everything is documented in a legally compliant way.”

Johannes Becker, Head of Digital Marketing & CRM, Berliner Festspiele

Log

The challenge lay at the intersection of good user experience and strict data protection. With the dynamic double opt-in logic, a single form is enough for four channels.

Consent is only recorded in a legally compliant way, for exactly the chosen topics, at the moment of the click. The fact that sign-ups rose by almost 90% shows that people subscribe to relevant content when you make it simple and transparent.
